Excerpt of the speech delivered by the DCE:
It is a great honour for me to join you to celebrate this occasion of the 67th Anniversary of Ghana’s Independence. Every year, we gather like this on 6th March in remembrance of not only the first day of Ghana’s freedom, but also in recognition of the struggles and toils our ancestors went through in fighting for political emancipation for this dear nation of ours. It is for this reason the theme chosen for this year’s celebration is “Our Democracy, Our Pride”.
The theme has been carefully chosen to highlight our successes in the past 32 years of the Fourth Republic as the most sustained period of stability in terms of constitutional rule and adherence to the rule of law.
We must therefore, take pride in our maturity living within the tenets of democracy over these years and should seek to protect and build on it.
As a district we continue to grapple with the challenge of improving performance at the basic level, since the creation of this district. The district Assembly has not relented on its efforts in prioritizing education both in planning and budgeting for the provision of hardware infrastructure and support services to the sector. There are also a number of development partner interventions towards increasing performance. What is left now is the attitudinal requirement in terms of good parenting, regular attendance to school by both students and teachers, as well as effective supervision and monitoring. We need to collectively do this in order to support our children to enjoy the opportunities of equal rights of access to education and other avenues of personal development, which our democracy offers for all children of this country.
Let me however, indicate that the district recorded a marked improvement in the BECE from 71% performance in 2022 to 75% in 2023. With this, I think that it is not all dooms day but rather it is very possible together, if only we commit to recording the positive changes. We must together commend the teaching fraternity and the entire education directorate for this record.
