Welcome to Mion District Assembly

The Mion District Assembly was established on the 6th February, 2012 by Local Government Act, 1993 Act 462 and Legislative Instrument (LI) 2064. It was officially inaugurated on 28th June, 2012. The district was carved out of the Yendi Municipal Assembly due to increasing population and to enable development reach all communities. The capital of the Mion District is Sang. The district is located in the eastern corridor of the Northern Region of Ghana between Latitude 90 – 35” North and 0o – 30” West and 0o – 15” East. The district shares boundaries with the Tamale Metropolis, Savelugu Municipal and Nanton District to the West, Yendi Municipal to the East, Nanumba North and East Gonja Municipals to the South and Gushegu Municipal and Karaga district to the North. 

The district covers a surface area of 2,573 sq km and has a total population density of 36.9 persons per square kilometre. 

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the total population of the district stands at 94,930 with relatively more females – 47, 768 (50.3%) than males – 47,162 (49.7%). An overwhelming majority (89.6%) of the population resides in rural areas while 10.4 per cent are in the urban areas. 

The district is made up of three area councils, which are Sang, Jimle, and Kpabia. 


The three area councils together have twenty (20) electoral areas

The district has a total hundred and seventy-nine (179) communities. 

Sang is the administrative capital and Sambu, the traditional capital which is Mion paramouncy of the district. These two major towns are the major urban settlements in the district. 

Other major communities include Jimle, Zakpalsi, Kpabia Nadundo, Kukpalgu, Sakpe, Bofoyili etc. 


The Assembly partners with government agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners to implement development programs and projects. The assembly has a strong commitment to stakeholder engagement and participation, regularly consulting with communities and other stakeholders to ensure that their needs are met in the planning and implementation of development activities.

The assembly's mission is to enhance the quality of the people of the district by facilitating the maintenance of law and order and mobilization of human and financial resources to provide quality socio-economic services especially in education, health, agriculture, local economy, water and sanitation in collaboration with other development partners and in conformity with broad national policies.

The vision of Mion District Assembly is to create a clean and environmentally friendly district which attracts the right expertise and investment into vital economic sectors that creates high level of employment opportunities. A district where children, women and men have high quality and sustained health services, education, economic resources and above all participate in decision making.

The vision of Mion District Assembly is to create a prosperous, peaceful and socially cohesive district where citizens have access to quality basic services, and where the private sector is supported to thrive, leading to job creation and economic growth.
